HABITAT

They are found in a variety of habitats including tropical and flooded forests, thick bush, cleared and cultivated areas, and savannah grassland.

DIET

They prefer to consume ants and termites, both in the ground and in trees. They can consume up to 20,000 of them each day!

STATUS

They are critically endangered, being the most trafficked animal in the world. Their population is unknown.

They possess the ability to curl into a ball when they feel threatened or are attacked

Tough scales that cover their body protect them from predators

Brown color helps them blend in with the various environments in which they live

Usually walk only on their rear legs, holding their front legs slightly above the ground and dragging their tail behind them to help with stability and balance

Flexible spines and long hind limbs allow them to jump up to 33 feet

Have small eyes with tough eyelids that protect them from the bites of insects they consume

Threats

1. They are hunted for their meat as it is assumed to be luxury icon and supposedly has a high protein content.


2. Their scales are harvested to be used as an ingredient in traditional medicine, and to treat diseases.


3. Extensive use of pesticides and insecticides reduces the Sunda Pangolin's food supply.


4. They are also caught in traps meant for other organisms, inflicting severe injuries.


5. They are the most illegally traded animal.
